A few months ago, Perplexity was probably known mostly to a niche audience of AI innovators and now it’s being mentioned in a top story in The Wall Street Journal along with TikTok and Amazon as threats to Google. Time will tell on that, given Google’s AI capabilities, data, distribution and Overviews product, but regardless, it’s a good example for leaders to think about three lessons learned from past emerging tech cycles:
Lesson #1: Don’t Underestimate The Speed At Which AI Is Evolving: If the impact of the internet was truly realized over 10 years, the impact of AI is less than three (ChatGPT turns two next month).
Lesson #2: Understand AI’s Impact on Consumer Behavior: Intimately understand the role your Brand plays in your Customers’ lives and not only utilize AI to keep step with their behavior but be willing to adapt quickly to seize greater opportunities.
Lesson #3: Keep an eye on the AI horizon: The beauty of AI is in its versatility and rapid evolution. While many are acquiring foundational knowledge it’s also essential to plan for where the NextGen opportunities will be (agents, voice assistants, synthetic data, vision and more).
We began introducing Perplexity to Cohort 1 of our ‘Mastering AI Skills for Marketers’ course and Clients earlier this year and we haven’t found a person yet who isn’t impressed.
